Perseverance means, "steadfastness and persistence." God's will for our lives is that we persevere in our relationship with Him. Persevering means that we endure through hard times when we have absolutely no strength to endure.
Our relationship with God will be tested. However, our obedience and faithfulness will be demonstrated through our determination to persevere. True discipleship is exemplified when, instead of quitting on God and giving up, we stand in His word when our Christian character is attacked. Jesus gives us a great example of lack of endurance in the parable of the sower in Mark 4:16-17. It says, "And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended."
Righteousness calls for us to be strong in faith, determined to remain steadfast and rooted in the truth of God's word. Therefore, perseverance is another key principle for demonstrating discipleship, and it is vital for living in the will of God. Jesus defines the process if perseverance in Luke 9:23 "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Our Lord bore a literal cross on Calvary, but He also carried a spiritual cross of rejection, persecution, and mockery on each day leading up to Calvary.
The battles we face do not come when we are in a state of sin; our battles come when we are living in righteousness. . Jesus said in Luke 12:51, "Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you , Nay; but rather division." This division is righteousness against unrighteousness. The unrighteousness of the flesh, the world, and Satan are constantly at warfare with the righteousness of the Spirit within us (Gal. 5:17) Our salvation places us into an eternal position with Christ through which we have power to win any battle. The key to victory is abiding in Christ. John 14:27 says, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Every battle won is a step toward a more intimate relationship with God. Each battle lost or given up only sets us back in our spiritual growth. God uses our battles to strengthen us for His ministry.
Conflict in our lives is a sign of one of two things. Either we are distant from God and He is trying to get our attention or we are in the center of His will and growing and learning from our experiences.
Today I challenge to to grow and learn from your experiences. We cannot lose when we turn to Him.
