From The Heart
Woven Hearts
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 18:1
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
I would like to share with you a lesson I taught to a Sunday school class at a church we were singing at. The teacher is a dear brother in Christ who is right now in ICU fighting for his life. Because of his prompting for me to teach his class, God has woven mine, his, and his family’s hearts together as one. God has compelled me to share with the entire world this lesson of how deep and unconditional God intends our love to be for each another. I also ask you to intercede for brother Paul Kell and his healing as you read this.
God created us for two main purposes – to worship Him, and to love Him and then others with all our heart, soul, and mind. 1 Samuel 18:1 teaches us how God expects our hearts to be woven, not only with Him, but also with others. It says, “And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” When we receive Christ as our Savior, He knits His soul with ours. We should be sold out to and protective of Him and His truths without compromise.
David and Jonathan were great human examples of what God can do in our relationships with others. However, it is important to note that without God’s Spirit inside you, there is no way you could ever demonstrate such unlimited, unconditional love for others as did David and Jonathan.
God’s purpose in weaving relationships in such a knitted demonstration is to teach us that we must allow our hearts to be woven together for the cause of Christ and the completion of God’s Kingdom work.
Let’s learn how to weave our hearts together as these young men did as we study their character, convictions, and their covenant. Their character is found in the meaning of their names. Jonathan means “Yahweh has given.” David means “Well beloved.”
Their convictions are found in their faithfulness to God and one another. Their hearts bore witness of God as they instantaneously became friends. Jonathan had enough wisdom of the true intents of his father’s heart and the heart of David that his soul was as one with David’s. Their hearts were set on doing the righteousness of God. They stood on their convictions in spite of Jonathan being the son of King Saul. Their convictions overruled the old saying, “Blood is thicker than water.”
It is vital that we fully understand a covenant between man. Covenants between men were designed for three purposes. David and Jonathan’s covenant demonstrated protection (1 Samuel 19:1-7), securing peace (1 Samuel 20:21, 42), and friendship (1 Samuel 20:4).
Through our character, convictions, and covenants, we too can build and maintain woven hearts with Christ and with each other. Through our love and passion for Christ and righteousness, we will weave our love into the lives of those who share the same convictions. We will then enjoy friendships, secure peace, and protect those we love.
What must we do to have woven hearts? What must we do to make and keep covenants with our fellow laborers and become pleasing and effective for God? The Bible gives us seven answers in the illustration of David and Jonathan. Their hearts were woven because they:
1. Purposed to be faithful to God and each other.
2. Purposed to respect each other’s belief and convictions.
3. Were aware of the dangers coming against them and they promised to fight them together.
4. Knew the direction to take to conquer their foe.
5. Were willing to fast and pray for one another.
6. Would bear one another’s burden in every struggle and triumph.
7. Had a secret and God ordained a woven relationship.
From my heart to yours, I challenge you to study these two men and their relationship. Purpose in your heart to be woven more and more with the heart of Christ and others. A quote I have concerning my relationship with others and the Lord is “We may be miles apart but we are always a heartbeat together.” We can only live this quote if our hearts are woven together in Christ.
