Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

“And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”

A brief survey of 1 Corinthians is in order according to the title of this article. The church at Corinth had been established. Paul was experiencing great difficulty keeping the pagan lifestyles of Corinth out of the church. The Christians were having a spiritual warfare and corruption was having a great affect on that body of believers.

Throughout the entire book, Paul exhorts his apostolic authority as he deals firmly with division, abuses of spiritual gifts, and immortality. In chapter 1, Paul begins addressing the divisions while he conveys to them that the Gospel will never be earthly wisdom. In 1 Corinthians 1:27, he explains this as he says, “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” For most of us, this verse totally goes against the grain of our common sense thinking. This verse appears totally contradictory of our earthly training of moral disciplines and principles.

Why would Paul write this with such authority, boldness, and conviction? Because Paul had lived foolish and wise, weak and mighty. His life changing experience on the road to Damascus had called for a surrendering of all he had for the Gospel’s sake. Paul had an unexplainable passion.

Paul’s passion went far beyond and was worth so much more to him than his genealogy, his education, his family’s dynasty of wealth and prestige. When Paul met the Savior, none of those things mattered any longer.

Our Scripture text reveals who Paul was willing to become for the Church (the body of believers) to walk and live with the same unexplainable passion. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 says, “And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

I can relate so deeply with Paul. That same passion drives me to beyond radical at times. I can’t speak with excellent educated words, but I love you with the love of Christ. I don’t have all the wisdom of someone highly educated and affluent, but I will share the knowledge of God’s Word that He has bestowed upon me with whomever He will allow me to share it with. All I know is Christ and Him crucified.

I too find myself teaching, singing, and sharing in fear and trembling. Not in fear of God, but in the fear of reverence to God. I cannot offer you persuasive words or philosophical solutions. However, I can with an unexplainable passion give you the truth of God’s Word that will free you eternally, release you from bondage, and make you a person of spiritual principles and a pleasing child of God.

Paul’s passion for the church at Corinth was for them to overcome the obstacles of paganism and problems of the world. As the bride of Christ, Paul urged them to get past the influence and peer pressure. He longed for them to take on a passion for God and righteousness that would make them live a life unexplainable.

From my heart to yours, I long for you to live with an unexplainable passion for God. People will not understand it, but because of God’s power upon and in you, they will fear and respect that passion.

I Just Love Jesus,
