Put on the Spot

Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 4:2

“…be instant in season, out of season…”

I just returned home from attending the Women in Christian Media Convention and the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Convention in Nashville, TN. It was a very busy but productive week in the service of the Lord.

I had an “out of season” experience one afternoon while in the exhibit hall of the NRB Convention. A gentleman was walking around with a microphone and a cameraman doing interviews of people attending. He approached me at a very busy time at my booth to do a brief snippet interview with me about my testimony. Just when I thought the interview was over, he turned around with the camera in my face and asked me to quote the Ten Commandments in less than 30 seconds. Needless to say, I was put on the spot. I think I named 3 or 4 when I realized I had failed to “be instant in season, out of season.” My mind went blank; I got camera fright, and realized neither of those excuses released me of my responsibility of being able to quote the Ten Commandments.

Exodus chapter 20 is where they are recorded in the Word of God. I knew them, but when put on the spot, I could not fulfill what had been requested of me.

I didn’t feel embarrassed or ashamed. However, I did feel heartbroken that I was not given more time or the opportunity to complete them. It is not unlike me to simply reach for my Bible (which was in a chair in the booth), open it to Exodus 20, and quote them exactly as they are written. Again, I was not awarded that opportunity. Instead I was left standing speechless as the gentlemen scolded me that I should know them. Then he moved on.

This interview was all done in clean fun, but it reminded me of the importance of knowing the Word of God with such an x-ray vision heart that when a “put on the spot” moment is before me, I can fulfill what is required.

From my heart to yours, I encourage you to always “be instant in season, out of season” when you are put on the spot. However, never let anyone make you feel ignorant or as a failure in situations such as I just described. God knows your heart and He longs to bring His Word to your remembrance when He is going to use you for His honor and glory.

I Just Love Jesus,

A wise man doesn't know all the answers, they simply know where to find them. I am not sure where I first heard this quote, but it is something my mother said on a regular basis. I love it! I may not have every word committed to memory, but I know where to seek wisdom(just like you do!).. from my Bible. The words may not have flowed freely when you wanted them to, but your life is a shining example that those words are hidden in your heart that you might not sin against God. You may not could have quoted them in 30 seconds on camera, but you have lived them for all the years I have known you!

Don't feel so bad. It's good to know time does not matter with God. I am sure He is more pleased that He knows How much you love him, rather than how fast you can recite from His word. It would probably happen to anyone who was put on a spot. It's satan who wants you to beat yourself over the head about it. Brenda God knows how much you know and love Him. as you say, Ain't that good! I love you too.
