Scripture Reading: Romans 8:22

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

Pain takes many forms: physical, mental, emotional and spirtual. Physical pain can be masked or relieved by simply taking a pain pill. It can be totally alleviated by pinpointing its cause and finding a cure. The cure may require treatments or even surgery, but in most cases it will go away.

Mental and emotional pains are often treated with medications, but the pain of the circumstances remains, preventing a healing. These pains can be caused by things that happened in our childhood or just by the general stress of life. The effects of mental and emotional pain usually cause physical pain as well. The stress of circumstances can cause many physical ailments: chest pain, headaches, heart palpitations, stomach upset and much more. The release of stress hormones into the body affects the whole nervous system.

We can mask mental and emotional pain with nerve pills, antidepressants, HRT, sleeping pills or even the most drastic measures of street drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Regardless of the category our pain falls into, it will affect us spiritually if it goes unattended.

Our first goal is to find the cause of our pain. It can be anything: rejection, abuse, divorce, abandonment, finances, disappointments, fears, addictions, relationships, our past, feelings of failure, etc. After we identify the cause of our pain, we must confront it and deal with it. The longer we mask it the more damage it will cause.

Harboring pain builds a resistance for healing. Even physical discomfort seems easier to handle when we can complain. Though it doesn't take the pain away, there's just something soothing in being able to admit that you're hurting.

After we've identified, confronted and dealt with our pain, we must confess to God its effects. God will help us to deal with the pain, and He will deliver us from its bondage. He is our only hope for overcoming the pains of this life. He can restore us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Whatever diversities of pain you're carrying, God will help you. We read of so many people throughout the Bible's pages who lived lives of dreaded pain. They suffered from sin sickness, physical ailments, mental adversities, emotional breakdowns and spiritual warfare. God was faithful to see them through, and He is the same God now that He was then. He will see you through the pain you're carrying.

From my heart to yours, I encourage and challenge you to identify, deal with and overcome your pain.
