From The Heart
Fear the Lord
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 3:7
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
The world puts a shadow around the phrase the "Fear of God." The mentality of today's culture and religious beliefs teaches us that to fear God is making Him a person of evil or great punishment." The Bible teaches that if we fear God we are reverencing His power and authority. God is to be feared in the sense of the chastisement that comes from intentional and pre-meditated acts of sin.
Believers and unbelievers alike are under the authority of God almighty. Proverbs 3:7 says, "Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil." The next verse tells us what benefits come with fearing the Lord. It says, "It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones." Then verses 11 & 12 say, "My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord: neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth."
Fearing the Lord brings health and refreshing in our relationship with Him. Without fearing the Lord, we will have no foundation that will keep us concrete in our convictions and His righteousness. Without fearing the Lord, we will fall to temptations and the mind battles that we wrestle with on a daily basis.
Fearing the Lord does several things for those who acknowledge God as their superior authority. Fearing the Lord:
1. Holds us accountable.
2. Keeps us alert.
3. Defines our decisions.
4. Convicts us of sin.
5. Reminds us of who we represent.
6. Embraces His will.
Hebrews 10:26-27 says, "For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. But a certain fearful looking for a judgment and fiery indignations, which shall devour the adversaries."
Fearing the Lord is not an option. Without the fear of God in your heart, you live powerless and vulnerable to your lusts and the tactics of satan.
From my heart to the heart of every person who reads this, I pray that you will long to live in the "Fear of the Lord" and that God's fear represents the reverencing of God's will for your life and the fear of sinning against and becoming of none effect for Him. Again allow the fear of the Lord to be "health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones."
