From The Heart
Enlightened

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:17-19
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened ; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe , according to the working of his mighty power.”
In the original Greek language, the word “enlightened” in verse 18 means “to bring to light; to render evident; to give understanding to.” A few weeks ago, the ministry spent a Friday evening and Saturday morning teaching a mother/daughter retreat. The small community had a burden for their young girls as well as their adult ladies, and the crowd was exactly the size God knew would receive Him.
Brooke and I taught from the young adult edition of Restructuring Your World, a book we co-authored together. Everyone in attendance received a copy of the book so they could follow along with our teaching. We opened our Bibles together and taught on the issues and pressures of life and the peer pressures that young and old alike encounter daily.
In this teaching series, we expounded on the importance of spending time daily reading and studying God's Word for ourselves. We also taught how to gain understanding of the importance of God’s Word in our lives. Ephesians 1:17 says, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.”
At the end of this particular session, every young lady in attendance was so focused and receptive to the lesson that they began to participate with questions, confessions, and excitement. They realized that God loved them and wanted them to spend time with Him.
God opened the eyes of these young ladies and women. They received what God had to say and turned their fears, circumstances, and life-styles over to Him. After the service, they were so inquisitive about what they had heard and asked questions until around midnight. Brooke and I both would have stayed all night if it had been necessary to clear their hearts and minds. They left the church on Friday night so fired up to know that God had something to say directly to them. The left with a different attitude and a different heart for being what God intends for them to be as His children. What a blessing!
Through the truths of God's Word, their hearts, minds and lives had been enlightened to the light and love of Jesus. They come to the knowledge that, regardless of what the world offers, it is never as safe and secure as what God and His Word promises. Ephesians 1:18 says “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened ; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.”
How long has it been since you have allowed the Lord to enlighten your heart through the truths of His Word? How long has it been since you have sat down with your Bible in hand and allowed the Savior to pierce your darkness? If a little child hungers for the Word of God, we adults should also hunger and thirst for it.
From my heart to yours, I pray that you will lay down whatever has hindered you from being enlightened with the truths of God's Word. Take up the Word of God and allow Him to fill you not only with His promises, but also with His greatness and power. Ephesians 1:19 says “And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.”
