From The Heart
Commands not Choices
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Genesis 18:19
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
My faithful husband preached a message not long ago about the difference in being called and being commanded by God. I am his favorite listener, his cheering section and most definitely his greatest student. He teaches me so much when he is preaching.
As I listened intently to his sermon that Sunday morning, God began to steer me in the direction of His commands for His people in Scripture. Every word related to command was speaking intimately to me. For example, Genesis 18:19 says “…he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD to do justice and judgment…” From this one verse, God reassures me that I am His child and I am commanded to keep the way of the Lord. I have no choice, I am commanded!
In Genesis 27:8, Rebekah commands Jacob to obey her. If we live under and abide in the commands of God for our own lives, then God will use our commands for our children as lessons of godliness and obedience. Righteous leaders from the church to the workplace will be honorable and respected by their peers.
I want to be a role model to all who come before me. I long first and foremost to be obedient to God’s commands. Second, I long for others, from my family to strangers, to see me living in and under the commands of God’s Holy Word.
Oh, precious friends, as children of God we have no choice but to obey the Lord. It is “there” that we will find ourselves in the center of His will.
From my heart to yours, I plead with you to pay close attention to the command of God for your life. Do not run from it. Realize you have no choice in the matter, and it is better to obey than to live in the misery of disobedience.
When God commanded Aaron to be Moses’ mouthpiece, he obeyed. When God commanded Abraham to leave his kindred and country, he obeyed. There is a great reverence of God for His people who obey His commands. Again, we have no choice but to heed to the commands of God.
One of the members of my staff posted on New Desire’s Facebook page a challenge for everyone to find all the words of command, commands, etc., in the Bible. I thought I would give you the numbers of each in this article according to the King James Version of the Bible. These numbers will vary as we use various resources or different versions of the Bible.
Command 103
Commands 104
Commandeth 13
Commandments 167
Commanded 431
Commandedst 4
Commandest 3
Have fun with this as you search the Scriptures. I invite you to comment and/or post your findings on New Desire’s Facebook page or in the comments section of this article.
