From The Heart
Breaking Bread
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Acts 2:44-46
And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
When the New Testament church was established the people experienced a change of heart. They went from hoarding their possessions to selling all they had and giving to everyone the same amount. No one lacked for anything. Their needs were met.
The Bible states they would all gather for worship and then they would go out from house to house breaking bread and sharing the Gospel. People were permanently changed as they shared the love of Christ.
I just witnessed this same effectiveness in people who heard me teach on this at my 19th Annual Women’s Conference. These women and girls were challenged to take the bread given to them and share it with someone who was hurting, poor, unsaved, bitter, hard-hearted, rebellious, or disobedient toward God. I challenged them to listen and wait for God to show them who to break bread with and the results have been amazing.
Breaking bread is a simple means of and tool for giving someone the love of Jesus. It also gives the giver a satisfaction in their service for the Lord. The one receiving may appear a little distant or unsure of the giver’s heart and sincerity, but God will always make them receptive in time.
I have been thrilled at the messages I have received from the women who took this challenge. I have received reports of God giving them the words and compassion as they approached others with their bread of the Gospel. Young girls have sent a message to my inbox on Facebook telling me they broke bread with their parents who will not attend church with them. They have testified of how much stronger their faith in God has been since they shared their bread.
From my heart to yours, I pray that we will all get the boldness to break the bread of God’s love with those whom we love but have strayed; those who are lost and need salvation; or those who are poor, rejected, hurting and angry with God and life.
Breaking the bread is real simple. Share your sandwich with someone and while you do, tell them what God has done for you. Take someone to lunch and allow them to pour their heart out as you listen, then assure them you will be praying for them.
To all the young people, I pray that you will share your snack with someone at school, church, and those you have daily activities with. As we all break bread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Lord will add “to the church daily such as should be saved.”
I would enjoy reading your comments at the bottom of this article of how God used you to break the bread.
