From The Heart
Be Not Afraid
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Joshua 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
It is the close of another year. A time in which the uncertain and unknown has plagued our lives, hearts, and mind with a fear that crescendos with every step we take. We not only dread tomorrow, but we awoke today paralyzed with fear of today's events.
Our Scripture text begins with a question, "Have not I commanded thee?" This question reminds us of who has today and everyday in His control. God asked Joshua this question. God commanded him to "Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid." The world and its rules and regulations have cast a fear upon us that causes us to doubt and heed to the command of God. We should never let the world and satan dictate our inner thought and our outward behavior.
God's command to Joshua was to be not afraid nor dismayed. The word dismayed describes the state we get into when we doubt God's control in every area of our lives. The word "dismayed" defines the majority of the people's state of being today. It means to be prostrate; to break down, by violence, confusion and fear; to discourage; to cause to go down; to scare or be terrified.
Is this definition defining your condition of existence? Are you broken down literally prostrate from the fear of today and the unknown of tomorrow?
Oh precious saints of God, let us not leave off the rest of Joshua 1:9. The part that should lift us all up from our prostrated position of fear to an elevated position of praise and encouragement. It says, "for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." WOW! What a relief, what a promise!
From my heart to yours, I pray that you will believe that God is with you in every situation and in every place. He is in full control and you are commissioned by God to receive His control and to "be not afraid." I long for all of us including myself to believe this word from the Lord and live it today and every day.
May we all start today purposing in our hearts to serve God unafraid in the upcoming year. To God be all glory and may your new year be blessed.
