Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 7:12

“For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.”

For the next four weeks, we are going to study excellence. We will study Scripture as well as other literature that will bring us into a deeper knowledge of excellence.

When I speak of excellence, I am not referring to secular or corporate success or worldly gain. I am talking about striving for excellence as a born again child of God who possesses the Holy Spirit. He (the Holy Spirit) is our power for obtaining excellence. Based on our Scripture text, it is almost impossible to live in excellence without knowledge and wisdom.

My definition of wisdom is pretty simple, yet complex. “Wisdom is knowledge applied.” This is where wisdom becomes complex. You have to take many different parts of learning and connect them together in order to gain wisdom. Until what you know has been put to work in your life it can never become wisdom. We must aim or strive for excellency by obtaining wisdom.

To aim means to direct a weapon. It means to direct purpose and intention. First, to aim you must focus and concentrate on an object and point toward it. Next, you must release. You must have on the proper equipment and protective gear and turn loose of the arrow. Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”  Finally, achieving excellence is when you reach the state or quality of being exceptionally good.

What is the quality of your performance? What is the state of your attitude? Are you demonstrating excellence?

1“Excellence can be obtained if you:

“… care more than others think is wise.” But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise;” (1 Corinthians 1:27).

“… risk more than others think is safe.” Paul risked it all for the sake of the Gospel. In 1 Corinthians 9:22-23, Paul said, “…I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.”

“… dream more than others think is practical.” Joel 2:28 says, “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”

“… expect more than others think is possible.” Even when man thinks it is impossible, the Bible tells us that “with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37) and that through Christ we can do all things (Philippians 4:13)

Aiming for excellence as a child of God requires you to be the weapon. You must aim with purpose and intention, and focus on the object of your passion, which is Jesus Christ. You must release your passion with such a superior quality that your performance in every area of life, from home to the streets, demonstrates a reputation of exceptional righteousness. This requires a crown of endurance, stamina, and motivation. 1 Corinthians 12:31 says, “But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.”

From my heart to yours, I compel you to activate your wisdom and invest your money into God’s Kingdom work. You will then be aiming for excellence.

What a worthy standard for us to focus on. Sometimes we fail, but we are still in the midst of the battle. I am thankful that I have the Holy Spirit to intercede for me, cause I frequently need Him. Truthfully I guess I keep Him pretty busy. Thank you, Brenda for faithfully setting a high standard. Excellence-Uncompromiised!
