About My Father's Business
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Luke 2:49
And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
As we celebrate Christmas this year, let's take some time to reflect on the customs of the time in Biblical days when it all began. Passover day was drawing nigh, and all the Jews were making their way into the city. As they learned that Jesus was present they came by great multitudes to hear Him teach.
The custom for such a feast as the Passover required every man from the age of twelve to participate. This feast was derived from the Old Testament and signified the shed blood of the Lamb having to be applied to save God's chosen people from destruction. This was an annual feast in Jerusalem and was considered a feast of celebration, a feast of freedom and a time of worship to the One and only true God.
The Passover feast was drawing nigh. People were coming in and out of the city making preparations for this annual event. In Luke 2:42, we see that at the age of twelve Jesus also celebrated the Passover feast with His parents. This is when Jesus stayed in the temple listening to and asking the teachers questions. His mom and dad had gone a day's journey before they realized their son was missing. Where could He be? Among the thousands in a traveling caravan, Jesus was nowhere to be found. Three days later they found their twelve year old son, not only listening to the teachers but also revealing that He too had understanding and answers. The Scripture says, "And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" At the young age of twelve, He knew He had to be about His Father's business.
Let's remember as we enter into the Christmas season that our time here is limited. We all should be about our Father's business, not just today and this time of year, but everyday throughout the year.
