You're Invited to a Pity Party
by Labron Cason
Scripture Reading: I Kings 19:13b-14
“ And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”
You will never read about a more powerful prophet than Elijah. Elijah comes to town in a whirlwind and leaves out on a chariot. He had so much power with God, he could step out and say it was going to rain, and it would. He could say it was not going to rain, and it would not. He saw God extend the life of the flour barrel, and he watched God raise up the widow’s child. Man! Elijah experienced the power and glory of God.
Elijah ran across a woman by the name of Jezebel who sent him a message. She told him she was going to do to him what he did to the false prophets. He was so afraid of this woman that he ran into the wilderness, frightened and in self pity.
In the midst of his pity party, he sat under a juniper tree saying, “God I want to die.” Do you think he really wanted to die? If he did, he would not have been running from Jezebel because she said she was going to kill him. Elijah’s self pity was nothing more than discouragement of feeling like he was all alone in serving God (I Kings 19:13b-14). When Elijah could not help himself, God sent an angel and brought him provision from Heaven. In spite of his discouragement, Elijah was God’s anointed man.
In spite of your discouragement, if you are born again, you are God’s anointed. You may find yourself in self pity with your lip poked out, wanting to die. Your juniper tree is the power of the Holy Spirit. The precious Word of God is food for your discouraged soul. You have Jesus, and He is all you need.
