"That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." Where is your faith? Is it in your family and friends? Perhaps your church and Pastor? Is it in our government? As I look around in my life, in the lives of others, and in the world it becomes more and more apparent to me that people will disappoint you. People will let you down. Even those you thought less likely to do so. |
As I look around in my life, in the lives of others, and in the world it becomes more and more apparent to me that people will disappoint you. People will let you down. Even those you thought less likely to do so. Friends often betray us and hurt us. Families sometimes argue and fail us. Even our church members aren't always what we think they should be. And well our government...I won't even go there! Life is so full of things that will at some point let us down.
All of these things though they are generally good things, I've learned they are not things to place my faith and hope in. They are not things for me to build my life upon. 1 Corinthians 2:5 reminds me of this, it says, "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."
This verse seems pretty self explanatory but let's break it down just a little bit: Paul is writing to the church at Corinth and in the first 4 verses he is reminding them how he came to them and was with them through some hard times and he was reminding them that his goal wasn't to tickle their ears with things they were used to hearing but that he shared with them from the Spirit and God's power. Then we get to verse 5. He did these things "that your faith", we will stop here. He's saying that your assurance, belief, trust and confidence; should not be in men. Because their "wisdom", which in the original Greek means "specifically of the learning and philosophy current among the Greeks and Romans in the apostolic age intended to draw away the minds of men from divine truth, and which stood in contrast to the simplicity of the gospel." That sounds like things going on today as well, everything this world seems to believe, stand for, and teach is completely contrary to the gospel and what the Word says. Paul is telling them, don't trust or put your confidence in the religions of men and what is the popular beliefs now, because it goes against the Gospel and what God says. Satan is using them to deceive you!
Instead, he goes on to say, put your faith "in the power of God." He is the ONLY thing that will never let you down, that will always be true, that is unchanging and unwavering! That is what you should trust, believe and find assurance in! Put your confidence in the Lord, for He will NEVER leave you, nor forsake you. He will NEVER lie to you, because He is not a liar the Bible tells us that several times in Numbers 23:19, Titus 1:2, and 1 Samuel 15:29.
There is so much in this short chapter of 1 Corinthians 2, and I couldn't write about all of it, but I encourage you to read it. The chapter goes on to talk about having true wisdom by receiving not the worlds teachings but by having the mind of Christ!
I end this by asking, what are you placing your faith in? Is it people or is it Christ? Is it in the things of this world or in the Lover of your Soul? He is wanting a relationship with you if you don't have one and is yearning for you to completely place ALL of your faith in HIm!
