Turn, O Backsliding Children
by Brooke Cason
Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 3:14
“Turn, O backsliding children saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion.”
- Have you ever wondered away from your close walk with God?
- Are you searching for worldly possessions and forgotten where your wealth comes from?
- Are you going to church every time the doors are opened but only out of obligation and not desire?
- When the plate is passed, are you throwing some money in but it’s not your tithes?
- Are you concentrating on success in society rather than effectiveness for the Kingdom?
- Are you more worried about what you peers are thinking of you rather than how God sees you?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are who Jeremiah is referring to in our Scripture text. He’s referring to Israel and Judah as “backsliding children.” To be a called a child of God, you must possess salvation. You can’t be a child without it. You can’t be “BACKSLIDDEN” without salvation. If you’re just going through the motions of “church,” but you are lacking SALVATION, then you’re lost.
Once we accept Christ as our Savior, we are then married or possessed by our LORD, and then He gives us promises. The first promise found in the Scripture text is from “and I will take (accept) you one (properly united) of a city. Although we may have backslid, our LORD is saying to us if we just turn to Him and be properly united in our “marriage” to Christ that He will accept us.
The second promise in this passage of Scripture is found in “and two of a family.” He promises to reunite us with our Spiritual family. We all know that CHRISTIAN fellowship is important. We seem to carry better character if we surround ourselves with fellow Christians instead of worldly people.
The last but most precious promise in this verse is “and I will bring you to Zion.” Jeremiah wanted these “backslidden children” to know that if they will return to fellowship with God then he will bring them to Zion which was a mountain of Jerusalem, the place of God.
We can use this today. As long as we are properly united (married to the King of all Kings), we are part of His family, and we can rest in the city or place of God. We can rest in heavenly places just knowing we are His children and we have fellowship with Him.
In Christ,
Brooke
