Systematic Prayer

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:7

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

The first type of prayer that I want us to look at is systematic prayer. What is systematic prayer, and is it good or bad?

Systematic prayers are those payers that we usually rush through just for the sake of saying them, like the blessing at each meal. We often say them just to be released from the guilt of forgetfulness and carelessness. Saying a systematic prayer also makes us feel good about ourselves because they make us look “holy.”

Jesus said in our Scripture text, “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.” God condemns shallow, traditional prayers that are not from the heart.

Does this mean that we would be better off to skip those meal blessings? No, it does not. We should simply be more aware of what it is we are doing. Our prayers, for any reason, should be sincere with God. Prayer should come from a sincere heart. God commends persistent prayer. God doesn’t tire of hearing us say a blessing at each meal; He tires of hearing us say the same prayer at each meal that we’ve said everyday, for every meal just because we’re supposed to say it. God doesn’t even mind hearing the same words over and over again, as long as they’re said with sincerity.

Systematic prayer often becomes simply a pretty prayer with no action. The same prayer, said from the heart rather than from memory or tradition, can touch heaven. Discipline your prayer life to one of sincerity and you can see great results even from a systematic prayer.

"Our prayers, for any reason, should be sincere with God."

That's good sister Brenda. We don't want people that we love and believe in to just talk to us from a script or just to be able to check it off our "to do" list. God does not want that from us, from the heart that's what we want and so does God.

I have done this so many times, just run through a prayer..It is so easy to repeat the same thing every time but I am learning just talk to God like he is right there with you cause he really is..He does want to hear our heart and boy have I been pouring it out to him..I have so many things to be thankful for and we get in such a hurry we forget to thank him for what all he has done for us and for what he allows us to have..Thanks Ms. Brenda for these posts, I love the daily devotation book that this came from.....I am praying for you and your family...Love you!!
