Scripture Reading: Luke 8:15

“But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.”

If you have any desire at all to live for Jesus, you are ready for a self-examination program. Before you can see God’s will for your life, you need to take a long, hard look at yourself in order to know your true condition in Christ Jesus.

As I examined myself several years ago, my condition went from “critical” to “not expecting to make it.” However, God brought me through this because I was honest with myself and with Him. He loved and taught me through every problem and battle that I faced. When I realized I had made it through, I was even stronger than before. I was closer and more in love with Him than I was when I started.

I want to share with you some of the questions I asked in examining myself. As you read them, ask yourself if you have wondered the same things.

            1. Why can’t I live for God the way I’m supposed to?

            2. Why do I let all of these other things sidetrack me?

            3. Why can’t I understand the Bible when I read it?

            4. Why doesn’t God ever answer my prayers?

            5. Why do I keep going back to the things that cause sin in my life?

            6. Why do I keep putting myself in bondage?

            7. If I’m so miserable with my life, why can’t I let God have full control?

Do any of these questions sound familiar to you? Really think about it and be honest with yourself, because honesty makes a pure heart.

I am so thankful that God saw fit to answer all these questions for me. He will answer them for you, too, if you are seeking. Don’t be ashamed to answer these questions honestly. Honesty within is the first step in growing. Jesus teaches us the significance of honesty in Luke 8:15 when He says, “But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.” In this Scripture we see that it takes being honest with ourselves and with God to become victorious, effective Christians.
