Righteous Indignation
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: John 2:13-16
"And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables."
The people in the temple were making a mockery of God's place of worship. Jesus found their dishonesty and greed disgusting. Passover was a time for presenting a sacrifice for sins and whorshipping God, but it had been turned into an opportunity to open a marketplace. Jesus' anger at such behavior led to righteous indignation.
Should we allow our anger to go uncontrolled? Jesus' angry actions were in response to the people's disrespect for God. We, on the other hand, get angry and violent over trivial things. Uncontrolled rage and righteous anger must be separated. It is okay to be angry about sin and evil, but we must be careful not to lost control and overstep the laws of our government and the authority of God.
Our anger should be dealt with and controlled in a Christian manner, respecting God's authority. Ephesians 4:26 says, "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath." Anger does not become sin unless we refuse to deal with it. If we wallow in our anger, we begin to plot revenge and take the matter in our own hands. We deal with our anger righteously by confessing it to God and allowing Him to deal with the situation. Romans 12: 19 says, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." Let God deal with your anger instead of allowing it to hinder your relationship with Him.
