Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:17

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”

In the last few days, we have learned so much about how to use our weapons when we go into war. These weapons of our warfare are vital for survival. However, if we abuse or misuse these weapons, we can end up seriously injured. The weapons God has blessed us with as Christians are the same weapons that we use to hurt and slay the brethren. This is the very reason that I felt compelled to point out the weapons of our warfare, and proper usage of them.

The blessing of being in God’s army and going to war is that our Commander is always with us. If we were in Iraq under the world’s commander in chief, he would not always know what was ahead of us and could not warn us with the Rhema Word. That truth ought to make us want to shout. It is God who goes to war before us. We will understand this better as we study these last two pieces of armor, the sword of the spirit and praying always.

The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. The Greek word for the phrase “word of God” in Ephesians is “Rhema,” a command or spoken word on a specific matter. Taking up the sword of the Spirit means using the command or spoken Word from our Commander in Chief regarding our specific battle. If we draw our sword based on what we think rather than what the Commander says, we may find ourselves deceived and wounded. We must wait for specific instructions. The Holy Spirit will send us a “Rhema” Word.

The Sword of the Spirit teaches us the enemy’s tactics, prepares us for combat and specifically instructs us regarding the battle. We should use it as our battle buddy, our artillery and our foxhole. If we do not know God’s Word or if we fail to apply it to our life, we will miss God’s specific instructions for our battle.
