Responsibilities

Scripture Reading: Matthew 10:37

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

We know what our daily responsibilities are for our homes, our families and our jobs. Each day we get up with the intention of fulfilling those responsibilities. Without hesitation, we go to work each day, and we rearrange schedules to accommodate spending time with our families. However, we often leave off the responsibilities we have to Jesus Christ and His Gospel.

Sometimes we tend to shrug off our irresponsibility in these matters by telling ourselves that God understands the demands on our lives and the weaknesses and temptations we face. God does understand, but He also allows us to face the consequences of our irresponsibility. Adam’s irresponsibility caused him to have to toil in sweat every day of his life for what God had been providing freely. Moses’ lack of responsibility caused him to miss out on entering the promised land. David was irresponsible in his duties as king, and it cost him the life of his child.

It is our responsibility to praise God every day. We also need to study His Word and share and protect the Gospel of Jesus Christ. These are as much our daily responsibilities as going to work, providing for our homes and protecting our families. Jesus commands us to love Him first with all of our heart, soul and mind. The time and place for fulfilling these responsibilities is found in today’s Scripture text. “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

Each morning, it is our responsibility to put God first above everything and everyone.  What is first in your life?

"It is our responsibility to put God first above everything and everyone."

I love how perfect God's timing is. The man who teaches our class on Wednesday nights had to work late tonight, so Dad asked this morning if I could come up with a short devotion for the youth. I had an usually busy day at work so I didn't have a lot of time to prepare like I would have liked, but I was able to pull out some things I had been studying on putting Christ first. (Do you hear the irony in that last sentence)? I have to admit that at times I find myself too busy...mostly because I can't tell anybody "no," and I take tend to take on one too many things at a time. I have been reminded this week, especially today, to slow down and put Christ first. It always works out better that way :). Thanks for this post. I love you!

Brenda, thank you for this devotional. So many times, we don't put God first in our lives. We seem to get it backwards. We say family church and then we move on to the other responsibilities of life. We've got it backwards. It should be God, family and then the rest will fall into place. Thank you for your insightful studies. I just love you!

You have to be talking to me, cause I know that I have put God on the back burner a bunch of times..I get home from work then have to do stuff here and I have to admit most of the times I did things that wasn't important and left God out or gotten so sleepy that I didn't give Him the attention He deserves. I sometimes wondered what kind of shape I would be in if He treated me the way I have treated Him and that is scary..He is always there and I do pray but He hasn't been right on top of my world and I want Him to be there..I have gotten better but I still not where I need to be.. and I don't just want to give God the leftovers, He deserves it all..Thanks for these post..love you
