A Passion to Persevere
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:27-28
Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.
Key Thought: “Our Christian emphasis throughout the world should be that of our position, persecution, and perseverance in Christ Jesus.”
Key Points:
- To live on earth and to be God-loving and God-fearing means to give Christ’s gospel to a lost and dying world.
- A passion for perseverance requires us to be humble, teachable, and obedient.
A passion to persevere is the result of an unhindered walk with God. It reflects the knowledge, wisdom, and power of our Almighty God. A passion for perseverance makes us rely upon this power as we anxiously, with joy, carry out the gospel. To live on earth and be God-loving and God-fearing means to give Christ’s gospel to a lost and dying world. This also means that we must have a passion for perseverance because a lost and dying world will not easily accept the gospel.
A passion for perseverance requires us to be humble, teachable, and obedient. We cannot be taught, nor can we comprehend the Word of God, until we can understand and rest in our position. We cannot grow, be humbled, nor can God deal with us if we do not suffer persecution. We cannot know the will of God or His plan for our lives if we don’t persevere. All of this stems from a passionate love for God. Colossians 2:6, 7 says, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”
Our Christian emphasis throughout the world should be that of our position, our persecution, and our perseverance in Christ Jesus. Without the understanding of these three, we can never fully abide in the joy and confidence of our salvation. It is through these three elements that the Holy Spirit teaches us of the Person and the love of Jesus Christ.
