Overcoming Persecution and Suffering
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Think about the times you have suffered because of your good intentions. Think about the hurt and the thoughts that went through your mind. Think about the bitterness that welled up within you toward the one who caused your pain or hurt you. Didn’t you want revenge? Didn’t you want to take back all of the good things you had done?
In our attempts to deal with the pain, our flesh becomes weak. Satan uses this against us to divert our attention from God and His principle of suffering. Satan corrupts our minds with thoughts of being forsaken by a so-called loving and holy God. These thoughts are from the devil and the petty feelings of our flesh. God is holy and loving, and He has mercy in our times of bitterness and questioning.
Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” God’s Word is our weapon for fighting off the thoughts of the flesh and the doubts planted in our minds by Satan.
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, His weapon was the Word of God. God’s Word is His voice in our lives. It will explain our sufferings and show us what lies ahead. It destroys Satan’s powers and delivers us from all evil. God’s Word teaches us the greatest principle of suffering. First Peter 4:14 says, “If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified."
