Opened Eyes - Part I

Scripture Reading: Genesis 3:7

"And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons."

I grew up very shy and recluse, and found it difficult to start a conversation with strangers.  If someone started talking to me by asking a question,  I was then able to carry on a conversation with them. I believe many people have this problem. I have found that most people like to talk about themselves, and I now find it easy to begin conversations by asking about them or what is going on in their life.

As time goes by, a restless spirit grows inside me to talk to as many people as possible.  I have a conviction to talk with people to see what their thoughts are about themselves and what they think other people would say about them. Would others say they are a good person or a bad person? This usually gets to the heart of man’s sin against God pretty quick. I start here because the Gospel does them no good if they don’t think they need a Savior.

Recently I had an opportunity to witness to a man I met who said he was a Universalist- Buddhist, but he came from a Protestant background. As I was listening to his explanation of what he believes as a Buddhist, I talked of Jesus and salvation. He kept saying, "I see your heart but I can’t see it with my own eyes." This man has read the Bible and was aware of a lot of what we believe as a Christian. But he kept telling me he just couldn't see it. Some people need a sign to believe. They walk looking down because they can’t walk looking straight ahead with their head up knowing their feet will hit the ground.

My brother and sister in Christ, we wonder why someone does not see what we see. If we remember back to our life before becoming a Christian, we will have to admit that we also were once blind to the Gospel. Genesis 3:7 says, "And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons." There is no worse feeling when you have your eyes opened by the Holy Spirit and you see your sin for the first time. You hide from people because you think "If they only knew the real flesh inside the shell of an exterior, they would be disgusted and would have nothing to do with me.” So you put on a mask and walk around saying "I am a good person.”

Adam and Eve experienced this feeling when they saw their sin. They thought if they could hide it from God everything would be okay. Do you see yourself anywhere in this picture? Are you hiding your sin?
