Scripture Reading: John 6:18-20

“And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.”

We have all weathered many storms in our walks of life. You may have just come out of a storm, you may be in the midst of a storm, or you may be headed into a storm. There is one thing for sure; satan is a roaring lion seeking to devour us.  Whatever the case may be the decision on how we will ride the waves and stand against the wind is ours.

There have been some battles in my life that have been like a ripple in the water, others like a twelve foot wave and even some like a hurricane. It seemed the rain was beating me up, the wind was whirling uncontrollably, and the waves were drowning me. Through all these storms, I have learned to keep my focus on Jesus. I was like the disciples on the ship.  They were so focused on the moment and the storm that they were not sure if they could even see Jesus.  Our Scripture text says, “But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.”

The Bible says that Jesus came down off the mountain from praying, walking across the sea to their ship.  He bid Peter to “come.”  All Peter had to do was step out, give Jesus control and walk, but he did not stay focused.  He began to look everywhere but to Jesus and he began to sink.  Jesus had already assured them to “Be not afraid,” but Peter lost focus. This sounds familiar to me and my circumstances at times. I get focused on God, but the storm and the wind build to great measure and begin to consume me. Before I know it, I am focused on the battle and not on God. I forget that I cannot fix it, but He can.  He is the Master of all my winds and all my battles.
