Just Look Up

Scripture Reading: Mark 6:50
"...And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid."
In Mark 6, Jesus had fed the five thousand and had new orders for His disciples. Beginning in verse 45, the Bible says that “He constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before Bethsaida…” while Jesus stayed behind and went up on the mountain to pray.
It was the fourth watch of the night, between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. The disciples had been rowing most of the night and had only made it halfway across the sea. What should have been a two or three hour trip had taken them all night because “the wind was contrary unto them.”
In verse 52, the disciples’ hearts had become hardened and they forgot about the miracle Jesus had performed earlier when he fed the five thousand people. In our Christian life of trying to serve God and raise our families in a world where everything is contrary to how we believe and want to live, life can be hard. Oftentimes our hearts become hardened.
When the devil is throwing everything at me, I remember the greatest miracle Jesus performed in my life when He saved me by His grace and gave me a new life in Him. In verse 50, Jesus said, “Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.” Jesus cares for each one of us and the circumstances we face.
As busy as Jesus was on the mountain praying to the Father, the Bible says Jesus saw the disciples toiling in rowing. He came off the mountain and went to His disciples. He calmed the winds in their life, and He will calm the winds in your life too.
When you find yourself in your darkest hour, don’t forget the miracles Jesus has performed in your life and in the lives of others. Don’t let your heart become hardened. Trust in God and be not afraid. Just look up, for God is looking down.
