Just Be Still
by Angie GentryScripture Reading: Psalms 46:10
“Be still and know that I am God…”
Many of us, especially us women, are busy-bodies. It’s hard for us to sit still and relax because we always find something else that needs doing. Before I became unemployed, I was constantly on the run. I woke up in a flying run every morning, rushed around to get ready for work and to get my daughter ready for and off to school, rushed to work, worked all day then rushed home from work and ate supper, picked up in the house, washed laundry, got things ready for the next day, and finally went to bed at sometime around 11:00 p.m. or after.
If anything happened to throw a kink into my daily plan, I would figure out some way to fix the problem or work something new into my schedule without missing a beat.
Many times in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we fail to see God working or fail to recognize Him in our lives because we are so caught up in what we must get done. It’s amazing how I have seen Him in my life over the past couple weeks. It’s amazing how, when circumstances are beyond our control, we realize we have to just be still and let God work things out in His time and according to His plan. God wants us to “Be still and know that I am God” everyday and in all things.
In the original Hebrew language, the word “still” in that verse means “to relax, to refrain, to let alone, to be quiet, and to let go”.
If we would apply this scripture to our daily lives, it would be amazing how unstressed we would become. We would learn to relax in times of difficulty and just trust God. We would refrain from trying to fix everything and realize that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). We would quit fretting over our circumstances and rest in the “peace of God which passeth all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). We would be quiet and listen intently for God’s still small voice. We would let go of our past and present hindrances and press forward “toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14)
I truly believe that if all Christians would apply this scripture to our daily lives, we would be amazed at how God would work through us to touch the lives of others. I believe that we would see a reduction in stress-related illnesses. I believe that non-believers would see Jesus shining through our lives in a way that they never have before.
My, what it would be like if we would just be still!
