Jesus' Concern

Scripture Reading: John 17:15

“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from evil.”

This Scripture text cannot be rationalized.  I am totally amazed that God’s only begotten Son who was about to pay my sin debt and take my place at Calvary would be praying for me to be kept from evil.  There is no greater love than this!  Jesus’ concern was for all of us who were forsaking Him and about to crucify Him. His concern in His own heart was justifiable because His death was not about Him. He could see beyond the cross. Just before Jesus was taken by the soldiers, His concern was not about what He was about to experience. His concern was for those who would be left behind to continue His work.

Jesus prayed for several things for the disciples’ lives. He prayed:

  • That through them the Scriptures might be fulfilled.
  • That they would have His joy in themselves.
  • That they would not be taken out of the world.
  • That they would be kept from evil.
  • That they would be sanctified through truth.

Jesus prayed not only for His disciples and followers that God had given Him. He also prayed for those believers whom the disciples would win to salvation.  Jesus’ concern was for the disciples and new believers to be effective in leading others to salvation, unity and in loving others and each other

My friend, we can rationalize life away and spend the rest of our days concerned about the things we want but do not have; that we lust for but cannot obtain.  These lusts cause us to lose our concern for or put conditions on our love for others. Jesus did not put conditions on His concern for us. What is your main concern right now?
