The Issues of Doubt
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Why do we struggle with serving God and depending upon Him for our every need? Why can’t we accept God’s unconditional love for us? What is the key problem that prevents us from developing a “courtship” with our loving Savior? Jesus provided the answer in Matthew 14:31. He bid Peter to walk on the water. As Peter’s faith grew weak, Jesus stretched forth His hand and defined the problem with these words: “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” We must realize that our greatest problem in developing a “courtship” with God derives from the same doubt that Peter experienced. Therefore, it is inevitable that we must deal with our doubt.

There are three areas of doubt that we must deal with. These are:
The doubt of our position.
This doubt produces questions, such as:
Where do I really stand with God? Does He really love me? Does He care about my problems? Why would God want a personal relationship with me? Can you relate to any of these questions at this point in your life? If yes, write it down somewhere and acknowledge what it is.
The doubt of our condition.
This doubt produces insecurities, such as:
I’m too unworthy to serve God. I’m not good enough to be loved by God. Why would God use me when I’ve never done anything for Him? Why would God want a relationship with me after all I have done? Which of these insecurities have surfaced in you lately? Write them down.
The doubt of our abilities.
This doubt produces fear of failure and provokes fearful thoughts, such as:
I can’t serve God—not me! I am not qualified to serve. What if I mess up? How can I be effective for God? What if God is not calling me to do this? These fears will steal your blessings. Do any of these thoughts sound like yours? If yes, acknowledge them. If no, maybe you have one of your own fearful thoughts you need to record.
