Devotionals
Increasing or Decreasing
by Dan Robinson
Scripture Reading: John 3:30
“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
This is one of the shortest verses in the Bible. In its shortness, it speaks volumes of how we are to mature in the Lord. In these seven words, we find powerful instructions on growing in the Lord. As we grow in the Lord, there will be indicators of our growth that are evident in our life.
The first spiritual indicator that we will notice is when we realize that God is increasing in our life and we are decreasing. The first part of our Scripture text speaks of God increasing. The second part speaks that “I” decrease. God increases first. He should be first in all that we do. We cannot decrease if we put God in the second position.
Throughout the next ten months, you will find specific devotionals of mine that cover what I call “Spiritual Indicators” of a growing Christian. Through these indicators, you will learn where you are in your relationship with God. You will know if you are allowing God to increase and if you are decreasing.
The Greek definition of increase is “to become greater of inward Christian growth.” The Greek definition of decrease is “to decrease in authority or popularity.” I pray that you will hang in here with me as we evaluate our spiritual indicators.
The best and most effective way for growing in the Lord is to first allow self, pride and lust to decrease. God will permeate everything about you as you allow Him to increase.
