I Know Better
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: Romans 7:17-18
“Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not."
Paul was certainly a man that you did not have to wonder what he was thinking. He did not deny his fleshly battles, nor did he deny that he fought sin on a daily basis. Our Scripture text reveals to us that Paul was very familiar with the battles of his flesh and sin; yet he never blamed God. We should never blame God for what the enemy and our flesh brings upon us. You may be thinking, “If God permits these things why isn’t he to blame?” God knows what it will take for us to serve and see Him like we never have before. God has a purpose for everyone. What we forget is that our old flesh has to be humbled and crucified daily. It is a stumbling block in our walk with Christ. Our Scripture says, “…For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing:”
We must trust God’s intentions when bad things come our way. We must remain faithful to Him in service and intimacy in spite of our battles with sin. God knows bad situations are coming before they ever get to us. But, because of who we are in Him, He has already put a protective hedge around us. Why could Satan take everything about Job but his life? God was protecting His own. Job even went on to proclaim that things he thought was abandonment, rejection and punishment from God were actually “Things too wonderful for him.” Job had come to the point that what he considered bad and devastating turned out to be great things in his life.
Like Paul, it is time that we call sin, sin and admit that we are not perfect. If God could not work through sin, there would be no Kingdom work taking place. Paul struggled daily with the things he knew he should not do. He admits that he knew better than to do them. You and I also know better and should discern sin from attack.
