The Howbeits of Life
by Labron Cason
Scripture Reading: Acts 27:26
“Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.”
I love the old English words used in our Bible, especially the word “howbeit” that Paul uses in our Scripture text. Paul and a group of prisoners were on board a ship. Paul assured them that everything will be okay. He told them that God was with them, but “howbeit, we must be cast upon a certain island.”
I want us to expound on the howbeits of life. We are saved! We are so saved we cannot get lost. How could we lose something that God says is for an eternity? Paul did not say “I am keeping my soul against that great day.” He said, I “am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12). We are saved, sealed and going to Heaven. Ephesians says we are seated together in the heavenly places. John the revelator has already seen the Church of Jesus wearing white robes and golden crowns, worshipping God at the throne. We are winners. We are more than conquerors.
We are going to make it through the pilgrimage of life, but howbeit we must be cast upon some certain islands. There are some howbeits in life that we cannot avoid. Paul received a word from God that everything would be okay. Having a word from God, though, will not exempt us from the troubles, trials and storms of life. Paul was not on the boat out of the will of God. He was on the boat in the will of God. The storm that he encountered did not keep him from the will of God, but it took him to the will of God.
Being in the perfect will of God will not exempt us from the howbeits and storms and trials of life. We must not lose our confidence in the middle of our howbeits. God has a way of turning the howbeits of our life into blessings.
