Scripture Reading: I Thessalonians 5:22

“Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

What is the first thing you think of when you hear “abstain from sin?” Most teenagers will think of sex, drugs and alcohol. Yes, those are definitely rampant in today’s society of teens. As a teenager, a lot of us think it is cool to hang out and drink alcohol with our friends. We are conned into trying drugs because they make us feel good. We think if we are going to keep a boyfriend or be accepted by the “boys” we must have sex with them.

It is not cool to drink. You are not old enough and we should obey the laws of the land. That means if it is illegal, it is sin! This goes for drugs as well. The philosophy that I lived by as a teen and continue to live by even now is that I do not want anything like drugs and alcohol controlling me. God is the only One I want controlling me. I do not want a substance controlling my thoughts or actions. If God is in control, I know there is a protective hedge constantly around me.

As a teen, my parents always lectured me with the verse I Thessalonians 5:22 which says, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” Although I did not drink and do drugs, I had friends that did. I was automatically tagged as “ONE OF THEM!” If I was seen at a party, although I was just hanging out, I looked as guilty as all the others did. You have to be careful who you hang with and where you hang out.
