Scripture Reading: Acts 27:21-22

“But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.”

Why do bad things happen to good people? If I could explain that and sell my explanation, I would be a wealthy man. Bad things do happen to good people. Somehow we have the idea that if we are saved and spirit filled, we will not have any problems.

Everything in life is not going to be easy. Some people use circumstances as a measuring stick to judge and gauge the will of God. If we judge and gauge the will of God based on circumstances, we will be confused. I am glad that we do not have to judge the will of God, the love of God and the blessings of God based on outside circumstances. Storms and trials of life will come our way.

In verse 22 of our Scripture text, Paul tells the others on board the ship to be of good cheer. It says, “And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.” How in the world are they going to be of good cheer when he just told them that they are in the midst of a disturbing circumstance?  Paul went on to tell them the reason for his comfort. Acts 27:23 says, “for there stood by me this night an angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve.” Paul could tell them to “be of good cheer” because he had a conversation with somebody bigger than the storm.

Have you had a conversation lately with someone bigger than your problem and fears? When God says everything is going to be alright, you can rest assured that it will.
