Full Joy
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: John 15:11
“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”
In John 15:11, Jesus told the people that He had spoken these things that joy might remain in them, and that their joy might be full. He went on to tell them that this was a commandment. They were to remain in joy and to love one another.
What does “joy” mean? It means cheerfulness, a calm delight or to be exceeding joyous. As a primary verb, it means to be cheerful or internally well-off. We receive the joy of Jesus upon being born again. He is joy, and when He chooses us, He bestows that same joy within us. Regardless of life’s situations, we should thrive in joy. Joy is an internal action that will be demonstrated externally as we allow the Holy Spirit to sustain us in the hardest of times. If our joy remains as Jesus commands in John 15:11, then even in the hardest, toughest times, when we feel worthless, we will remain joyful.
Remain means we stay with the One who chose us. It indicates expectancy in us. It signifies being present and standing when called. If we cannot depend upon and expect Jesus to deliver us, then we will be unable to remain in full joy. Being full literally means to cram and level up a hollow place, to influence, satisfy, verify or accomplish. It means to have a perfect supply.
As God’s chosen, we have a perfect supply for all of our needs – a precious Savior who knows and cares about everything in our lives. He is a protective warrior who fights our battles, and He gives a perfect promise that will never be broken. How can we not remain and be full in joy? Oh, if we could just grab hold of this and grip it with all of our might! Oh, the joy we could bear and produce with this truth in our hearts!
