Following a Father's Faith
by Dan Robinson
Scripture Reading: Genesis 22:7-8
“And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.”
Over the years we have heard many sermons on Abraham offering Isaac, his son, as a sacrifice to God. Abraham is being applauded for his great faith, which he did have. However, there is another character that comes into play in this event. This person is Isaac, Abraham’s son. This story is an actual turn of events that happened in Old Testament times.
This journey of faith for Abraham went much deeper than what meets the eye. Abraham had enough faith in God to believe and obey what God had instructed him to do. He was to take his son to the land of Moriah and offer him for a burnt offering.
I want to draw special attention to Isaac as he is following his father on this three day journey to the place of sacrifice and worship. He helps to gather and even carry the wood, while his father carries the fire and the knife in hand. Isaac is willing to do whatever and follow Abraham whereever he goes. In great respect and love for his father, he is willing to follow.
Our Scripture text shows us that Isaac had one question for his father, “..Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham’s answer was good enough for this young man, “...my son, God will provide himself a lamb...” Isaac says no more and continues to follow his father. Abraham bound Isaac to the altar upon the wood.
With a faith that is undeniable, Abraham demonstrated what he knew God expected from him. Isaac witnessed this faith, watched God provide a lamb and honored his father’s faith. Are your children witnessing your faith in God? Are they honored to follow in your faith?
