Scripture Reading: Luke 9:24-25

For whosoever wil save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advataged, if he fain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

We cannot be disciples of Christ until we are willing to serve. Jesus gives us an example of a faithful servant in today’s Scripture text: “But whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.” Giving up our lives is the principle of becoming a servant.

Giving up our lives is a strong statement, but it is meant for us to take literally. In order to become a servant, we must die to the flesh, giving up our old life and desires to become separated from sin and unrighteousness. We are already dead to sin (Romans 6:6-11), but we must crucify the flesh and its lusts daily.

Our life is found in God when we become faithful servants. We walk in the Spirit, rather than the flesh, desiring to serve God and others. This is the example that Jesus set for us. He gave up His life to become a servant to sin and death, taking the penalty of sin from us so we could have eternal life. Philippians 2:7 says that He “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”

Paul urges us to take upon ourselves the same type of humble service as Jesus did. Philippians 2:5 says, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” In order to take on the mind of Christ and become a faithful servant, we must come humbly, willfully and ready to live an unhindered, dedicated Christian life.

A life of following, fighting and faithfully serving will be full of mountains and valleys, but God has promised that He’d never leave nor forsake us. Remember, for every battle scar there is a reward in Heaven.
