Scripture Reading: II Timothy 3:1-5

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

I grow more excited as we approach the next spiritual indicator. Today’s indicator is when our desire to obey him becomes more intense and other things in our lives become less desirable and attractive to us. Our Scripture text is vitally important in grasping the point of this specific indicator. It gives us a list of things that hinder our desire to be obedient to God. It states that we are lovers of our own selves, covetous, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, truce breakers, traitors, heady, high-minded, but most of all lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.

Pleasures should not consume our lives. The most important things in life are Jesus and leading people to Him. We put too much emphasis in our 60 or 70 years of life compared to eternity. Our purpose is to be a light and salt to a lost and dying world, desiring to increase in a life of obedience to God.

The only way we can pass through this world is by faith, obedience and godly principles. We are to walk by faith and not by sight. We must put our lives over into Jesus’ hands.

If we are living obediently, we find ourselves becoming more intense in the things of God while worldly and fleshly pleasures are less attractive and desirable. If we desire to obey God, we will have a peace that passes all understanding and a life that demonstrates the effects of obedience.
