Defining Peer Pressure

Scripture Reading: James 4:7

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

It does not matter how young or how old we are, at some point in time we have to deal with peer pressure. To define peer pressure, we must break it down into two parts. Peer is defined as a friend, an equal (someone who you see as being equal to you), or a colleague (someone you work with or go to school with). Pressure is a force, something heavy, or something that weighs you down.

Peer pressure is when a friend or acquaintance forces you or tries to force you to do something you know is wrong. Peer pressure comes in many forms, such as, gossiping, drinking, drugs, sex, brand of clothes, and anything else we do to try to fit in. We may put someone down or be put down for the way our family does not have a lot of money, or we may come from a home with an alcoholic or drug addict parent. Those are things we or the person we are making fun of cannot help. These are pressures from our peers. We do not have to be ashamed of not wearing name brand clothes or not having a lot of money. Those things are material possessions. God does not look at our material possessions. He looks at our heart. We do not have to be “cool” to fit in. God has called us to be “a peculiar people.”

Regardless of our age, our Scripture text teaches us how to avoid becoming the victim of peer pressure. It says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”As we submit to God, we will be able to overcome and define the peer pressure around us.

Thank you :) I'm dealing with this right now. What to buy, what not to buy, who to talk to, who not to talk to. Most of the time I don't care what people think cause I'm only living my life for Christ and he's the only who counts. However, there are times when I find myself slipping into those positions of gossip, shopping, etc. I know there are a lot of things that the devil tries to tempt us with, but for some reason, it never hit me that, especially during our weak times, peer pressure was one of them. Now I know, and I will resist the devil, for I am a child of God!!!
