Scripture Reading: Acts 27:26

“Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.”

God had revealed to Paul that his ship was going to be destroyed.  However, if we read above and beyond our Scripture text in Acts 27, we see the entire plan for God to cast them upon a certain island.  Acts 27:44 says, “. . . some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.” The entire plan of God was for these men to see the ever increasing presence of God in Paul’s life.  Verse 44 says they all made it to land safely, “some on boards, and  some on broken pieces of the ship,” but God kept His Word to Paul.

This certain island they were cast upon harbored a group of foreigners that could have brought grave danger to Paul and these men. However, in Acts 28:2-3 we see that they showed them kindness, kindled a fire and received them because of the rain and cold.  Paul then gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire. In the process of doing this, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on Paul’s hand. The barbarous people knew this was a venomous beast and that Paul should immediately die from its poison. The rest of the plan for Paul being cast upon this certain island was for these people to see the ever increasing power of God in Paul’s life. Paul simply shook off the beast into the fire and suffered no harm. These people immediately thought he was a god. In reality, it was the ever increasing promise of God, the promise that the angel of God stood by him that night (verse 23).

We will all be cast upon a certain island at times, with uncertainty of what awaits us.  Paul knew that God was going to keep them safe, but he did not know until he arrived on the island the challenges that awaited him. Prepare yourself to be cast upon a certain island. Like Paul, having God on our side does not exempt us from adversity.
