Burn Your Ship

Scripture Reading: Luke 9:59-62

“And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

In these verses, we experience the true cost of being a sold out Christian. We see that discipleship requires sacrificing comfort for discomfort, family for faith and complete surrender to the will of God.

Notice in the text that everyone wanted to follow Jesus, but they needed to go back and finish unfinished tasks first. Jesus plainly reveals His mind on this in verse 62 when He says, “. . . no man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

I am reminded of a man by the name of Hernando Cortez from the early 1500’s who sailed to Spain to conquer the Aztec nation. Hernando gathered less than 600 men and with eleven ships set sail to advance against the Aztecs. Faced with uncertain terrain and numerous native tribes, Cortez knew the challenge ahead. To prevent his men from turning back, He led every one inland and then burned all eleven ships.  This army of men had nothing to go back to.

If you burn your ship, satan has nothing to use against you for turning back and putting your hand on the plough. Like Cortez, you will be faced with uncertain terrain, enemy forces and even your own excuses for turning back. What ship in your life do you need to burn in order to eliminate being defeated?
