Becoming a Soldier
by Dr. Brenda Robinson
Scripture Reading: II Timothy 2:3-4
“Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life: that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
In our Scripture text, Timothy reveals to us the sound principles for becoming a soldier that God knows He can depend on. He tells us to endure hardness, to avoid becoming involved with the affairs of this life and to become pleasing to the One who has chosen us to be His soldier. We must also realize that life is no longer about us.
It is time that we become the solider God called us to be when He saved us from sin. A soldier must be equipped for battle with armor of God that is activated by the Holy Spirit. Our armor includes our communication equipment, our BDUs (Battle Dress Uniform), and our weapons; and it will quench the fiery dart of the enemy.
If we are faithful and fully equipped, we will enter the battle with no fear. We must not only put on our armor, but we must also prepare ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally and most importantly spiritually.
When we enter the battlefield with our complete apparel, we know there are limits to the damage satan can inflict upon us. He can destroy the quality of our lives; steal our peace and joy; use other people to hurt us; produce fear, anger, doubt and confusion; and hinder our example for Christ. We must remember, though, that satan cannot take away our salvation; pluck us from the Father’s hand; separate us from the love of God; rob us of God’s protection, power and provision; or overpower the work of the Holy Spirit.
Satan has already been defeated through the work of Jesus Christ at Calvary! The war has been won, but the battle still rages. Enduring the hardness is having faith in the blessed fact that God is our Protector and Deliverer, and He will fight the battle for us.
What hardness do you feel you have to endure? Are you equipped to withstand the hardness?
